Cost to Company (CTC)
Cost to Company (CTC) is the total annual expenditure incurred by an employer to hire and maintain an employee. It encompasses all direct monetary earnings, employer statutory contributions (EPF, ESI), retirement accruals (Gratuity), and indirect perks.

Whereas: Take-Home (In-Hand) Salary = Gross Salary − (Employee EPF + Employee ESI + Professional Tax + TDS)
How CTC is Divided: The Three Tiers
To understand why an employee's net pay differs significantly from their offer letter CTC, examine the three fundamental components:
1. Gross Salary (Direct Earnings)
The total salary before any employee deductions. Includes Basic Pay (typically 40–50% of CTC), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Dearness Allowance (DA), Conveyance Allowance, and Special Allowance.
2. Employer Contributions (Retirement & Social Security)
Benefits paid by the company on the employee's behalf. While legally these are employer obligations, Indian companies include them in the overall CTC figure. Includes 12% Employer EPF, 3.25% Employer ESI, and statutory Gratuity accrual (15 days basic per year).
3. Employee Statutory Deductions
Deducted from the Gross Salary each month. Includes 12% Employee EPF, 0.75% Employee ESI, State Professional Tax (up to ₹200–300/mo), and Income Tax TDS under Section 192.
